True Love

My husband and I got married at eight in the morning. It was winter, freezing, the trees encased in ice and a few lone blackbirds balancing on telephone wires. We were in our early 30s, considered ourselves hip and cynical, the types who decried the institution of marriage even as we sought its status. During our wedding brunch we put out a big suggestion box and asked people to slip us advice on how to avoid divorce; we thought it was a funny, clear-eyed, grounded sort of thing to do, although the suggestions were mostly foolish: Screw the toothpaste cap on tight. After the guests left, the house got quiet. There were flowers everywhere: puckered red roses and fragile ferns. "What can we do that's really romantic?" I asked my newly wed one. Benjamin suggested we take a bath. I didn't want a bath. He suggested a lunch of chilled white wine and salmon. I was sick of salmon.

If I bring this to his attention, he will say something sarcastic like he didn't realize that we are 18 years old. He will imply that people our age don't hug and kiss all of the time. But I think that plenty of people our age still love one another. We have married friends who still hold hands and look at one another with affection. Or he'll be frustrated when I am too tired to have sex. He kept hinting about how unhappy and lonely he was until he finally initiated a separation and moved out. Last week, we went out to lunch while the kids were at school. We were actually having a great time. Then the school called saying that one of my kids was in the nurse's office and needed to be picked up. My husband got annoyed. We've Been Separated Six Months On A Trial Basis - What Are The Chances My Spouse Will Come Back?

"I never in my wildest dreams would have guessed that we would still be separated after half a year. I honestly thought that the separation might last for a month at the most. Admittedly, the separation was not my decision. When to reconcile won't be my decision, either. But I figured that my husband would quickly see that being separated isn't a picnic. Although he doesn't seem all that happy being separated either, he has made no attempts to reconcile. It is going on six months now. We talk semi-regularly. We are cordial. Neither of us is seeing anyone else. So it doesn't seem that a reconciliation would be out of the question. However, some of my friends say that it has just been too long to believe that my husband will ever come back. Are they right? Does it get to the point where too much time has passed during the separation?"

How Do I Have A Real And Meaningful Conversation With My Spouse During The Trial Separation?

"I know that I need to spark some very good conversations with my separated husband. It feels as if our marriage is on very thin ice. Unfortunately, I do not get to talk to him nearly as much as I'd like. He sort of brushes me off sometimes when I call him, so we basically talk about once per week - mostly about the kids. I understand why it's very important that we talk about the kids and I'm not complaining about this. But when I try to steer the conversation to something else - like our marriage - things get uncomfortable or awkward. We struggle with the conversation or there is silence. My husband and I used to be able to talk about anything. We used to effortlessly talk for a long time. Now it seems like everything is a struggle. The only conversation that goes well is when we talk about the kids. Last night, I resorted to talking about politics and that was a disaster. I am not sure how to spark a good conversation and that is just so ironic because this man is my husband and I should be able to talk to him."

And then, about four weeks later, he called me up and confessed that I was right and that it was a mistake to separate. He basically said that now he's ready to come home. My initial reaction is to either be relieved or to gloat. I can't forget how much I begged him to stay and how he all but ignored me. I've considered telling him that I am not ready for him to come home simply to teach him a lesson. He needs to take decisions more seriously - especially when they affect people other than just himself. Some of my friends say that I should just give him a pass for the sake of my marriage, but I hate that idea. It's like he just gets to decide our fate on a whim and then change his mind, while I just have to roll with the tide. His decision broke my heart, and I want him to realize it. What Can I Say To Prove To My Spouse That Our Marriage Is Worth Saving?

"My husband isn't all that interested in talking to me, much less in saving our marriage. We are technically separated. The great irony is that even he admits that I haven't done anything wrong. He says that we've just grown apart and that he doesn't feel the closeness. As a result, he doesn't want to live his life without the love and excitement that he thinks that he deserves. I have asked him not to be hasty in his thought process. I asked him to go to counseling, and although he hasn't told me no, he alludes to the fact that he believes it will be a waste of time. He sees our marriage as something that simply needs to be put out of its misery. I do not agree with this assessment at all. I know that we have a long way to go to restore our marriage, but I believe that if we both made the effort, we could honestly make it work eventually. The problem is that I just don't know how to get him on board when he's so very resistant to me. How do you convince your husband that your marriage truly is worth saving?"

My Husband Is Moving Out To See If He Will Miss Me

I hate that we have been fighting lately, but I do not want to lose my marriage. I do not want a separation, but he seems determined. So I asked him to get an apartment very close by so that we can see one another all of the time. He rejected that and said that he 'wanted the time and space to see if he misses me.' I Can't Seem To Stop Myself From Saying Hurtful Things To My Spouse And Now He May Want A Separation

"I will admit that I can be hot-headed sometimes. Before I even know it, something will come out of my mouth before I can stop it. Most of my friends know this about me, so most of them just ignore it when I slip. But my husband can not. And now he's saying that he is thinking about a separation because he almost feels as if I verbally abuse him. I will admit that when we fight, I often end up saying things that I deeply regret. And my husband is wounded by what I say. Sometimes, I apologize later and he seems to accept it. But now I realize he wasn't just brushing it off, since now he's saying that we should probably separate. It bothers me that he says I'm verbally abusive because that's obviously taking it too far. It's not as if I call him stupid or say other derogatory things. I don't want to lose my marriage. But sometimes, things just come out of my mouth. How do I stop?"

My Spouse Seems To Think That He Can Do Better Than Me

"I was heartbroken when my husband told me that he was leaving me to pursue a martial separation. When I demanded an explanation, I expected for him to try to gently explain that he just needed some time to himself. But I did not think that these small problems would amount to me potentially facing a separation or divorce. Instead of offering reassurances, my husband confessed that he was leaving because deep in his heart, he feels that 'there is better out there' for him. He is basically saying that he thinks that he will eventually find someone who is more suitable for him and therefore he will have the happiness that he deserves. He says that he wants a relationship that isn't so hard. My husband is a very good looking man. He is very funny and generous. Many women would be happy to have my husband. So I don't doubt that many pretty, capable, and sweet women might one day be interested. But I am interested in him, too. He is mine. And it breaks my heart to think that he might find someone else. This makes me so sad."

Can Things Deteriorate Before They Get Better After A Martial Separation?

But we are fighting as much as we did - if not more - as before the separation. My husband says that I nag him. He says that I give him no space. What Is an Appropriate Level of Intimacy Before Marriage?

The Bible does not give us a list of what qualifies as a "hint" or tell us what physical activities are approved for a couple to engage in before marriage. However, just because the Bible does not specifically address the issue does not mean God approves of "pre-sexual" activity before marriage. By essence, foreplay is designed to get one ready for sex. Logically then, foreplay should be restricted to married couples. Anything that can be considered foreplay should be avoided until marriage. If there is any doubt whatsoever whether an activity is right for an unmarried couple, it should be avoided (Romans 14:23). Any and all sexual and pre-sexual activity should be restricted to married couples. An unmarried couple should avoid any activity that tempts them toward sex, that gives the appearance of immorality, or that could be considered foreplay. Many pastors and Christian counsellors strongly advise a couple to not go beyond holding hands, hugging, and light kissing before marriage. The more a married couple has to share exclusively between themselves, the more special and unique the sexual relationship in that marriage becomes.
