My Husband Says Our Marriage Is Pretty Miserable. And He's Trapped

"I have long suspected that my husband wasn't happy in our marriage lately. Last night, we got in a fight about something that really didn't matter. I got defensive and told my husband that he'd been very distant to me and then he sarcastically replied, 'Distant? Well I'm still here, aren't I? And this says a lot because honestly, our marriage is miserable, but we're both trapped in it right now, so we just have to endure it.' I was actually very stunned by this. I didn't think that my husband was happy in our marriage. But his words were very harsh. How am I supposed to respond to it? How do you even come back from something like this? I don't know if he would tell me this because he just wants a divorce and this was his way of firing the first shot, or if he actually wants me to take action. Perhaps he was just trying to hurt me? When he talked about being stuck, he was probably talking about our kids. Neither of us has ever wanted to break up our family, but that's no excuse for saying what he did."

My Little Dear, It's Not Warm Outside!

Once again, it is the Christmas season, which means I have to put up with people offended by everything, particularly that pertains to Christmas. When I was young, we had a little saying, "Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you." And as far as I understand, we stood by that saying. Most people today have never heard that saying and maybe somebody ought to educate them on some of the realities of life. If words are hurting you, something is wrong with "you." Everybody is offended by something. I am offended by people who are offended by things I say, which makes no sense whatsoever to me. Where people got this offend-itis disease is beyond me. I wonder if there is any cure for this kind of disease?

How Do I Make My Spouse Feel Scared Of A Separation Or Divorce?

"My husband initially said he wanted a divorce, but then I got very upset and begged him to think of our kids. So he backed off some and said the maybe we could consider a separation. The thing is, I don't want a separation either. It would disastrous for our family and my husband is really being a baby who is going through a midlife crisis. We don't need to separate or divorce. He just needs a little dose of reality so that he realizes how good he has it. I have tried numerous things to make him see this. I've tried being very nice, but he won't play ball. So now I am trying to think of a strategy to scare him into dropping this whole thing. I have thought about telling him that I won't make it easy for him to see the kids, but my friends are cautioning me not to do this. They say that it's a low blow. Other than threatening to take him to the cleaners financially or to tell him that he'll never find anything that makes him happier, what can I do to scare him out of this?"

His only plan seems to be for us to live apart. He's not mentioned counseling or working on our issues. I sort of expected for him to deny it to try to save my feelings. But he didn't. He admitted that he loves me, but that he hasn't been 'in love with me' for quite a long time. Then he said he didn't plan to do anything about it for the time being because of our kids. This doesn't make me feel much better. A Front and Rear Guard for the Heart

I awoke as I normally do with the thought, what will I speak on today, and what will I write? Sometimes I already have the idea, but not this day. And then I read Acts chapter 14, and I see two words that summarise what Paul and the brothers were up against on that first missionary journey. First I see the opposition that they faced. The second thing I see is the flattery they encounter. Two completely opposite, and yet equally dangerous spirits, but both replete with opportunity.

I Am Not Sure What I Strive For In Terms Of My Marital Separation, Marriage, And Life

"I am newly-separated and I am struggling. This surprises me somewhat because before I was married, I was extremely independent. So I'd hoped that I would fall back into this once I was separated and might even enjoy my freedom. This has not happened. Instead, I feel like I'm floundering. I really don't know what to do with myself. I end up bugging my kids too much. My separated husband is still very distant. I'd desperately like to reconcile with him, but he's giving me the vibe that this isn't going to happen any time soon. Some of my friends are telling me that I need to turn my attention to myself and to other things. But this is very undesirable to me. I really want to just hope that my husband comes around, but maybe I am deluding myself. I want to hope and pray at night for what is going to make this better, but I don't know what that is."

I don't think it's useful in the present discussion to focus on the latter, because the former are so much more worthy of discussion and praise.

The Dynamics of Love and Control in Relationships

For some, in some situations, love is neither the desire nor do we have its agency. Love's not so easy. Situations like these we feel controlled or we act out of a need to have control. Why Would My Separated Spouse Be So Emotionally Detached?

"honestly, for most of our married life, my husband was actually sensitive and loving. If something happened to me or our kids, he would always be right there, trying to help and showing his concern. Within the last two years, our marriage changed. I would have hung there, but my husband wanted a separation. The idea was that hopefully, this pause would allow us to eventually regroup and come back together. I just assumed that my husband would continue to care about (and be emotionally invested in) myself and my kids. I guess I was mistaken about that because the only way that I can describe his demeanor is to say that he is emotionally detached. If I get upset, he doesn't even try to comfort me or make any gestures toward me. Recently, my kids and myself were in a minor fender bender. We were not hurt, although our car was. My husband did ask if we were ok, but he seemed more concerned about the damage to the car than to us. Why would a man who is normally sensitive and emotional be so detached? I just don't get it and it's scaring me."

Later I talked about this with one of my friends and she suggested that perhaps I should not show physical affection to my husband while we are separated. She said that when you separated, you aren't necessarily loving on one another. Is this true? Should I not be showing affection to my husband right now? He wanted to separate. How Do You Love?

The English language uses a single word to express the broad spectrum of the meaning of love: from the "l love you" over a passionate declaration to a casual letter signature such as "lots of love." Greeks defined love in more sophisticated terms such as Eros (Intimacy and Passion), Ludus (Playfulness), Philia (Comradeship), Pragma (Long Lasting Love), Agape (Love for Everyone) & Philautia (Love of the Self).
