Most teenage boys need to go through a stage of semi rejecting their mother. It's generally not because they don't love her. It's because they love her too much. If a boy does not detach from the first and abiding love of his life, his mother, he will never be able to form a truly independent, intimate relationship with the next great love of his life. If all goes well, the mother will be outgrown, however, do not think childhood-parental issues are then outgrown. No, they are only having a temporary break until they return with a vengeance. Every intimate relationship with a partner will bring back the old undealt with childhood-parenting issues. They were just lying in wait, to resurface in a different context - one in which we are an adult and can start to process things that were beyond us as a child to even understand, let alone resolve. Friendships cannot do this for us. They are just not deep enough. An intimate relationship unavoidably holds within itself the capacity to hurt and heal in an unparalleled way.
